Teh Tarik (Milk Tea) Ice Cream, Roti, Condensed Milk, Salted Peanuts Dessert

I often crave for simplicity in life.

Call me naive, but I want to imagine life without bitterness, jealousy, anger, politics.... Without having to deal with all the complications life brings.

Just imagine if we can have a simple life and everyone lives in peace.

I crave for the same sort of simplicity in the food I make. Life is complicated enough and I really don't have to bring it into my kitchen.

Sometimes all we need is a simple scoop of ice cream, a good book and a comfy chair.

Or maybe not. Maybe adding a warm roti, some sweetened condensed milk, few slices of banana and a handful of of crushed salted peanuts will make it better......

Teh tarik literally means "pulled tea". It's a popular hot beverage in Malaysia and Singapore, usually served in a Mamak stall. It's made of black tea and sweetened condensed milk. This mixture is then repeatedly poured from one metal mug held in one hand to another metal mug held in the other hand. During the pouring process, the tea is being pulled by distancing the two mugs. Hence the name, "pulled tea".

The pulling process serves to cool down the tea to the optimal temperature and to create a foamy/frothy top similar to the one of top of a cup of cappuccino. It is usually served in a large glass mug that resembles a beer glass and it is a perfect beverage to go with a a warm roti.

'Teh Tarik' (Milk Tea) Ice Cream Recipe
Makes 1/2 litre

Ingredients

150 ml cream
250 ml milk
3 tbsp black tea leaves
5 egg yolks
3 tbsp sweetened condensed milk

Method
  1. Add cream, milk and tea leaves in a saucepan and gently heat until just below boiling point.
  2. Remove from heat and let tea leaves infused for 30 minutes. Filter through a fine sieve.
  3. Beat egg told and sweetened condensed milk with an electric mixer until color turned pale.
  4. Add the milk mixture and whisk until combined.
  5. Pour the mixture into a double boiler and simmer under the mixture thickens and coats the back of a wooden spoon.
  6. Cool the custard mixture and churn in ice cream maker.
  7. To make the roti dessert: Heat up a frozen roti according to packet instructions. Drizzle with sweetened condensed milk. Add a few banana slices. Top it up with two scoops of teh tarik ice cream and finish it with a sprinkle of chopped salted peanuts.

Wow, I must have seen a version of Teh Tarik when we were at the Chatuchak markets in Bangkok. Looks incredible the way they do it.

Maybe our wish for the new year would be a life "without bitterness, jealousy, anger, politics".

Teh Tarik, my fave drink. I used to buy the Teh Tarik in sachette, it is nice enough eventhough not as perfect as the 'orginal' teh tarik in Malaysia.

Simplicity really can be oh so lovely. And necessary. But sometimes, it's nice to dress it up a bit. As in the case of these roti. Delicious.

Roti and ice-cream would be considered plenty weird in my country where it is known only as a savoury dish but oh my goodness it looks so good...I have to try this on my friends and see what they think:-)

Oh my gosh, that's so funny! I made Teh Tarik tea last week, it actually really brightened my mornings! Or maybe that was just the caffeine.
Looking at this, the ice cream looks even better! Dessert for breakfast might make my mornings that much brighter!

Great shots! I love teh tarik and I'm sure it is a perfect flavor for ice cream.

I have to say though that 5 egg yolks in 1/2 litre of ice cream is way too much. That must have been the richest ice cream you have ever tasted. I'll give it a try, but I am going to cut it down to 1 or 2 egg yolks.

Thanks!
