I love fruity scones and I was on the lookout for some interesting dried fruits to bake my first homemade scones. Yes, I haven't made scones before. I blame it for the fact that Mr J - being a Dutch - is not a big scone-eater and myself - being gluten intolerant - not able to eat a lot of them.
When Ninette, a fellow food blogger from Connecticut who visited Sydney last December and brought along this interesting Orange Flavored Cranberries, I knew I found the perfect dried fruits to make my scones.

I have also found a perfect occasion to share these scones: A summer afternoon pool party where the kids swam at the pool, the moms and dads seated by the poolside to sample these scones with our afternoon tea.

(Loosely adapted from Bill Granger's Simply Bill - Sultana Scones)
Makes 12
Ingredients
1 tbsp icing (confectioners') sugar
310 g (11 oz / 2 1/2 cups) plain (all-purpose) flour
1 1/2 tbsp baking powder
Pinch of salt
60 g (2 1/4 oz / 1/2 cup) orange flavored dried cranberries (If you can't find orange flavored cranberries, you can replace them with dried cranberries + 1 tsp orange zest)

30 g (1 oz) unsalted butter, melted
To serve
Butter and raspberry jam

- Preheat the oven to 220C (425F). Sift the icing sugar, flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl. Add the cranberries and orange zest (if using) and stir to combine.
- Add the milk and butter and stir with a knife to combine. Knead quickly and lightly until smooth and then press out on a floured surface to about 3cm (1 1/4 inches) thick.
- Use a cutter or glass to cut 5 cm (2 inch) rounds. Place close together on a greased baking tray. Gather the scraps together, knead again and cut out more rounds.
- Bake for about 10 minutes until puffed and golden. Serve with butter and jam.

Ellie - can you be more talented? You cook and bake sooooooo well, your kids and family are so lucky!!! I am hopeless in baking, LOL.
Oh Ellie, you always make me so hungry when I read your blog at work :P
Never heard of orange flavoured cranberries, but I'd love to get my hands on some!
Orange flavoured cranberries? But how do they get such an orange into something so small? lol... These sound lovely. I was craving scones this morning - you must have read my mind!
Gorgeous! So glad you finally tried making scones. Did you try them yourself? Did you like them?
I love how the scones are such cute round little things!
Hi Ellie, I am so excited you made something out of the cranberries!!! Your scones look like little breads. The scones we make in the US are triangular and super buttery and flaky. So interesting how the names change.
I adore Trader Joe's. I cannot go in there and just buy one thing. It's just filled with too much temptation. Your scones look heavenly. They're so poofy, almost like hot cross buns in appearance. Yum!
You've made something some simple look beautiful. Thought you were having a holiday.. pleasantly suprised by your new posting
I love a good scone and Ellie they look absolutely delish! The orange infused cranberry would of been a lovely change to date or sultana.
Ellie, these are SO pretty! I can almost taste them and am positive I need to make scones this weekend. :-)
i cant believe simple scones can looks so dainty and pretty..you do wonders!
Your scones look entirely seductive!
As usual, nice shots and scone also looks good. But kids doesn't appreciate scone much, so I seldom bake this.
Wow they look so so good. Definitely much prettier than lots of cranberry muffins I've ever bought!
They're just beautiful Ellie. Those cranberries are a beautiful addition to the scones. I would like to have tea part with you while having these scones and your other goodies. :)
They look so evenly sized and delicious. I love the orange and cranberries added. Must be very flavourful. Great with butter and jam and a cup of coffee.
Oh my, this is another in my to-do list.
Orange flavoured cranberry.. hmm.. why would people want to flavour the cranberry?? It's already nice on its own.
MMmm, orange flavoured cranberries sound fab! Your scones turned out perfect - great weather for a pool party :)
WOw, they look so cute :)
Love cranberry .. and scones! Perfect for breakfast :D
I love your scones! Chubby little flavorful gems! Don't think I have ever seen orange-flavored cranberries. They sound wonderful.
My scones are more like biscuits- I like them fine, but yours look good too. Copying now.
Love the idea of these - have never heard of orange flavoured cranberries, and this seems like the perfect way to use them. I love Bill Granger recipes, and these look wonderful. Thanks for sharing!

I love everything from Trader Joe's. When I saw the packet cranberries I thought Trader Joe's open their store there. These scones will be great for my breakfast now especially slatter it with lots of butter :)
I'm totally saving my orange cranberries Ninette gave for something as delicious looking as this! I honestly can't bear to open them as you can't find them here BUT I like how you provided a substitute of orange zest and cranberries for it. I may actually be able to part with it now!
Mmmmmm look at those nicely smooth dome shaped scone heads!!!!
you just reminded me I have to go to TJ's.
you have such perfect photos. I don't know if I want to make these as I would eat way too many with LOADS of butter.
!h, yes, a good gift indeed: a bag of Trader Joe's dried fruit! Lovely scones, so perfect. But hey, aren't you on vacation? Back so soon?

Scones with a cup of lady grey. That's a perfect afternoon pick up for me. They look delicious. I am a bug fan of dried cranberries. I bet they were so yummy.
I love cranberries! Sweet and tart, and they have such a beautiful colour. The scones look delicious, and your photography is stunning as always. :)
