I woke up one morning with this crazy idea of combining two of my favourite desserts into one: Matcha Ice Cream and Tiramisu.
Mr J is a huge coffee drinker, he was not too enthusiastic with my idea. I kept putting off from making it until yesterday when I found a great opportunity to show case my crazy idea.
It was another fun-filled event with fellow Sydney food bloggers Lorraine, Katherine, Trisha and Betty: Forensic Dinner Party at Trissa's house. Each of us had to bring a dish (entree, main or dessert) for the party guests to guess the ingredients.
I brought two dishes: French Anchoïade (recipe will be available later this week) and Matcha Tiramisu and many more dishes were brought in by other food bloggers. You can read more about the event HERE.
For now, please enjoy the recipe of the Matsha Tiramisu. If you prefer the classic Tiramisu, my recipe can be found HERE.
Matcha (Japanese Green Tea) Tiramisu
Serves 8
Ingredients
1 cup strong Japanese Green Tea
2 eggs
75 g caster sugar
250g Mascarpone cheese
300 ml double cream
1 packet Savoiardi sponge fingers (you can replace them with sponge cake)
Matcha powder
Chopped pistachios
- Combine the eggs and caster sugar in an electric mixer and whisk together until thick and light. The mixture should be thick enough to leave a trail on the surface.
- Put the Mascarpone cheese into a large bowl. Stir in a little of the egg mixture. Fold in the remaining egg mixture. Fold in the double cream.
- Cut the sponge fingers to fit the size of the base of the serving glass.
- Line the bottom of the glass with a layer of sponge fingers. Drizzle green tea over the sponge fingers.
- Sprinkle over a thick layer of matcha powder, then spoon Mascarpone mixture on top (3-4 tbsp, enough to cover the sponge fingers). Level the surface.
- Repeat the layers until it reaches the top of glass.
- Decorate with the remaining matcha powder and sprinkle generously with chopped pistachios.
- Cover and chill for 4 hours.

Ooh, that forensic party sounds like lots of fun!
What a great twist on the tiramisu! It looks fabulous too!
that is a brilliant idea for a party.
How interesting! So how was it?
Genius! I think it's a fantastic combo!
mmm! not a crazy idea.
I LOVE GREEN TEA TIRAMISU!
i love the colours, brilliant!
the pistachios make such lovely toppers :)
compliments the green!
You know what? This sounds perfect. Love green tea, love tiramisu, what's not to love about this?!? :)
We normally do our Green Tea-ramisu in a big, 9" springform pan. It looks nice, but it's tricky to slice. I like that you put it into individual serving cups.
I also like the addition of pistachios. Nice touch!
Yum! This dessert was great and last night was so much fun! :) I've made it before but without pistachios so it tasted quite different! Love the colours and hte green and pink of the pistachios :D
This looks beautiful! What a cool idea!
what cool idea for a dinner party! did you guys taste it blindfolded? :)
I posted a comment but not sure if it went through! If it did.. please ignore this one. Anyways as I was saying... that tiramisu was awesome! Such a clever dish to whip up - it looks great and tasted even better!! I can't wait for our next Forensic Eating!
That looks really great! The shot set up is great too.
I love Tiramisu + I love matcha = I'll probably love your matcha tiramisu...1+1=2 right? XD
Beautiful and delicious! (and I just had breakfast too...)
I had the pleasure of trying this dessert. Ellie, it was so yummy - I still have half a little plate leftover which I am guarding carefully from my husband!
Love Matcha tea, and I'll try your tiramisu! I've made last week Matcha ice cream: it was delicious (the recipe is on my blog). Thank you sharing yours...
Oohh green tea tiramisu! Brilliant!
O Man!!! I never would have thought of Matcha Tiramisu. What a great idea. The pistachio topping is wonderful to give that little crunch with the silkiness of the Tiramisu. Wonderful!
I love your green tiramisu,...real beauties!
I love desserts with tea! The other day, I had the most delicious black tea creme brulee, and since then, I've been on the lookout for more tea-infused desserts! Thanks for sharing
Wow you are a genius! Best invention ever!!!
Ahhh huh! I knew I'd find the recipe here. Well done Ellie, this dessert looks amazing. I'm tempted to try it out for myself this weekend ;)
Beautiful!!!
i loved this cake Ellie :)
Hi guys, hi Ellie - first of all Ellie, I loooove this idea... can't wait to try it out on the weekend... yumm...
Yesterday I went to buy some matcha powder, but I faced quite a chioce of different matcha powders... choices, choices... I was just wondering if you guys used good old plain matcha powder, or the matcha powder that has some sugar mixed in with it?

@ The Little Teochew: Thanks!
@ Muffinsareuglycupcakes: Thanks!!
@ Aptronym: Totally agree with you! Thanks!
@ Nate-n-Annie: I did make them in a squre tray to bring to the dinner. It's almost impossible to slice them properly. You have to scoop them using a spoon. I prefer the individual portion but it's hard to transport with all the glasses.
@ Lorraine: I didn't put enough of matcha. the pistachio nuts overwhelmed the matcha flavour.
@ Betty: Thanks!
@ Ravenous Couple: Thanks! No, we were not blindfolded. What a crazy idea! May try to do it next time.
@ Trisha: Thanks! Can't wait for the next one too!
@ Weekend Carnivore Thanks!
@ TabzChewy: Thanks! Let me know how it turns out!!
@ Trissa: Hehe!! It was great to meet you for the first time. Can't wait for to catch up with you again!

@ FFichiban: Hehe!! I know you will love it!
@ Chuck: Thanks!
@ Sophie: Thanks!
@ Jessica: Thanks! I love tea infused dessert too. Next, I am thinking of using chai tea.
@ ABowlofMush: Thanks!
@ Zine: Thanks! Let me know how it turns out!
@ Pille: Thanks!
@ Betty: Thanks!
@ Benny: Thanks! I used the plain matcha without added sugar. The tiramisu is quite sweet by itself, so additional sugar is not needed. Let me know how it turns out!!
@ Penny: Thanks! Let me know how it turns out!
The tart matcha works really well in desserts like this. It looks great!
Nice post, thanks for sharing this wonderful and useful information with us.
