Parisian Hot Dog

You can't get this in Ladurée or Pierre Hermé, but this is fun and it's so uniquely Paris.

During my first trip to Paris (more than ten years ago), I noticed this gadget at a lot of street stores along the Avenue des Champs-Élysées and Montmartre:

Before I could voice out my curiosity, Mr J asked me, "Do you like to try a Parisian Hot Dog?"

Why not?

I learnt something new that day. If you see this long pointy sausage-shaped metal thingy at a street store in Paris, you know you can stop in for your hot dog fix.

It's also very easy to make them at home.

All you need are 4 ingredients and a hot dog maker:

Parisian Hot Dog Recipe

Ingredients

1 hot dog
1/2 stick French baguette
Tomato sauce (Ketchup)
Mustard (optional)

Method

  1. Cook the hot dog the way you like it (steam, boil, grill or fry).
  2. Insert the French baguette into the metal stick of the hot dog maker.

  3. Squeeze tomato sauce and mustard (optional) into the hollow hole.

  4. Now you are ready for a perfect Parisian Hot Dog.

Bon appetit!

More FOOD PORN of Parisian Hot Dog found on Google:

Sadly, I noticed there were less stores selling Parisian hot dogs during our most recent trip to Paris. It has been largely replaced by the fromage hot dog (cheesy hot dog on a French baguette):

Hi, just happened to stumble on your blog. Actually, this type of hot dog is still very popular in Denmark, where I happened to be residing right now. =) Its being sold (along with normal hot dog versions)in many of the hot dog kiosks around here. =)

I'd like one of those - just Chicago style. They can tack on the pickle.

@ Howard: The new generation of Parisian hot dog. Bigger and better.

@ Amy: I had the same thought staring at my first Parisian hot dog.

@ Lorraine: Caught'ya!

@ Anonymous: I have seen it in the Netherlands with different type of bun. I guess it's fairly popular across Europe.

@ FFichiban: We ladies can't help ourselves :p

@ Betty: Thanks for stopping by my blog. Will swing by yourself shortly. I love hot dog too!

now this would sell in the USA, I know it would; people love their hot dogs no matter how the bread is.
I would totally eat one or two now.

the bright red hot dog in the pic looks just like a glazier brand hot dog, they are delicious garlicky dogs w/a bright red natural casing. the satisfying snap you both hear and feel as you bite into one of these dogs fresh of the grill brings me back to my childhood instantly. glazier's website is temporarily down but you can see and order them here http://www.shoptheadirondacks.com/gpage2.html
they are made in Malone, NY (far northern NY) and only available south to Syracuse. they are absolutely delicious and unlike any other hot dog you'll ever taste. i now live outside the home range but i demand my father bring me 5 lb packages whenever he visits and of course he comlies, lest he be denied entry into my humble abode and sent back the 6 hour treck to the north country.

@ Dawn: You are so right! I will do a Roti dog soon ;-)

@ ardub: This type of hot dog is pretty common in Australia. Glad to hear that it brings back your childhood memory.

What a fun blog! :) I've actually had very similar hot dogs in Hawaii. They were made in the same way but with an un-sliced hot dog bun and were called Puka Dogs.
I'm now on the hunt for a La Duree omelette recipe

Hi, I have to tell you something. I live in Paris and I hate Parisian hot dogs, as I am an amateur of good hot dogs. Sometimes, waiting for the train, or just before a trip, I go for it, however I am always disappointed. Parsian do not know howw to make a good hot dog, that's my opinion. Take care!
