I don't have a bread maker. My mum used to have one. She would make a fresh new loaf on the Sunday mornings whenever Mr J and I visited them and stayed for the weekends. Those were the days when we lived in Malaysia. Nothing is better than waking up to the smell of the fresh baked bread.

I have never thought of making my own bread when one can buy all sorts of fresh bread from the bakery. Not until I saw this recipe.

Beer + 4 other simple ingredients. No electric mixer is needed. Simply mix the ingredients together & into the oven for 45 minutes. I couldn't resist to give it a go.
The results are fantabolous!

Beer in bread-form... Brilliant! How did it taste? Could you sense there was beer in it?
If you don't have self raising flour you can also use regular flour plus 4.5 tablespoons of baking powder. That's what I do and it works great! I haven't tried with the cheezy top. I will next time though! I have just put melted butter on top right before putting it in the oven. This is so good! You can kind of smell the beer in there but at least I couldn't taste it so much.
This sounds really interesting! I'll definitely give this a go!
OMG! this is soooooo great! yays! finally! bread that is like super duper "easy"!!! i cant thank you enough for spotting this!
I like the sound of a beer bread and that cheesy crust look amazing!
Just found your blog, love it. I can't believe this is such a simple recipe ? I'm gonna try it on the long weekend, will let you know how it turns out!
Actually, what's the texture like on the bread ? Does it taste any good when toasted ?
@FFichiban: Well, depending what kind of beer you use. I can smell the beer but not actually taste it while I am eating but it has the beer after taste linger in my mouth.
@Jason: I read about that too and it will make the bread texture to be more fluffy because of the beer reacting with the baking powder. Gonna try it next time.
@pigpigcorner: Have fun making your loaf.
@chocolatecup: Thanks! You are welcome.
@Kevin: Thanks. I like the name too.
@Howard: Thanks for stopping by my new blog. I left my first comment on your blog same time as you did. What a coincidence! Back to the bread.. The texture is definitely more bread-like than cake. Some said it tastes like banana bread without the banana and sugar but I reckon the texture is very dense, a bit like damper. The recipe was featured in the magazine for Australia's Day Sepcial. It was recommended to eat it fresh (untoasted) with sausages and butter. I haven't tried toasting it. Bake one and judge it yourself.
I just got a hold of the beautiful delicious magazine and did see this recipe in it. Did the leftovers keep well?
@ Maya: leftovers... I am not sure. They are usually gone on the first day. :p
I'm trying this today. I think I'll try to shoot it, but I don't think it will be as pretty as your picture!
